England along with Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in the same group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major early encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing echoes their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

The Irish and Scotland also share a group together, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, they claimed a 36-14 victory, with their opponents unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked South Africa until the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

If the pools conclude in line with the current world rankings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from both England and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Opener

Hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at launch the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 stage for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six group winners will face a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
