The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like typical physical horror, but within Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple face the sort of issues that come with long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
